WELCOME!  -  I'm not much of a photographer but I enjoy taking photos that [to me] seem unusual or interesting. Sometimes I think they are funny, sometimes strange and sometimes R rated. I hope I can make you smile or even giggle a bit.

Old Bruce Hwy

That .... Believe it or not ... was once the Bruce Highway which we found when we were walking through the bush looking for gold. Is Connie waving goodbye?

No! I told her to close her eyes and imagine it was 1950. So she held up all the traffic.

Free rest area for weary travellers.

On this trip we found some excellent places to stop overnight (free that is). This place was brilliant - it looks as though Connie approves. It has now got three ticks in our book of stopover places.

Monster truck

As we drove through the city of Mackay (trying to avoid road hazards etc.) I caught a brief glimpse of a monster truck parked in front of a motel. After executing narrow backstreets for ten minutes I managed to get back to the main road for a pic...

It turned out to be a PLASTIC BLOW UP TOY..   ugh!

Can I get my choppers around that?

At a place called "The Leap Hotel" we got hamburgers and chips for lunch - the burger was so big that Connie had to think about it for a minute or two.

Nothing stops Connie

But it didn't stop Connie!

Kawaha

This large statue represents a black girl (I worked that out)called Kowaha. As I understand it.... In the 1860's the white police in or near Mackay recruited aborigines from opposing tribes to dish out punishment on each other if they did not follow white mans rules. This policy was a bloody disaster which resulted in aborigines who had carried out the white mans instructions being charged with crimes and murder. In a related incident, a group of local Aborigines was accused by settlers of either spearing cattle or spearing a man named John Greenwood Barnes in the arm. The group was approached by the Native Police Force and dispersed, with one woman, called Kowaha, (see next pic)..

The Leap

.. .. .. seeking refuge in caves at the top of nearby Mount Mandarana (left). As the police closed in, Kowaha jumped off a cliff clutching her baby, who was wrapped in a shawl. The baby survived, the shawl possibly acting as a safety capsule when caught on a bush, and the little girl was adopted by settlers James and Mary Ready. Many believe the baby was baptised Johanna in a Catholic Church on July 22, 1867, and that she married an Englishman called George Howes, bore three children and died on December 28, 1887, and is buried in the Mackay cemetery.

Dont talk on your phone

The locals told me that the driver was talking on his phone - and was pissed - when he misjudged the corner.
He wanted to walk the rest of the way home but his legs were both broken so he decided to get a lift - in the first ambulance that came by.

Wanted

Dead or alive, doesn't matter.

Mr Walker

I met Mr. Greg Walker, the occupant of the tent at the caravan park where he was having a rest.
This is NOT BS. He is walking from Springwood in the Blue Mountains to Cairns!!! He walks but his cart is occassionaly moved to the next town by helpful people. He left Springwood at the beginning of April and hopes to reach Cairns by mid July. He is raising money for MS research. I hope he reaches his target of $15,000.

The MS sign

See his sun bleached sign.
It says "Greg Chidgey".
"Do it for MS"
"Sprinwood NSW to Cairns QLD - 2019"
"Target $50,000"
